Core aeration in the fall, and sometimes the spring, has many benefits. Removing cores of soil reduces compaction resulting in healthier turfgrass root growth. 

Although often avoided, aeration can be performed in the spring even after a pre-emergent herbicide has been applied. Check out this article.   

Combined with overseeding, fall is the best time to aerate a lawn. Choose a seed that is suited for your lawn, sun/shade, etc, and blends well with the existing cultivar. Kentucky bluegrass requires more sun, irrigation, and nitrogen than turf-type tall fescue. No grass type will survive dense shade; however, fine fescue does well in areas with limited sun.

Except for current customers, aerations must be paid for in advance of scheduling.

One to Two days before: 

1. Mow your lawn 1/2 to 1" lower than normal. 

2. (Only If Dry) - Water your lawn deeply to make it easier for the aerator to penetrate the soil. 

3. *Flag your property lines

4. *Flag all hidden or hard-to-see objects in your lawn, including:

• sprinkler heads (working and non working)
• valve box covers
• in-ground lighting
• any object that could be damaged by an aerator
• any object that could damage an aerator

In addition, please have your yard free of toys, furniture, or anything else that may interfere with the aeration. 

We love dogs, but:
unless underground pet fencing is marked by the installer, we unfortunately cannot aerate such properties. "Invisible" fencing is often buried only 1-3" deep, making it highly susceptible to aerator damage. You may want to consider liquid aeration.

Watering

A thick, heathy lawn is your best defense against weeds and other pests. Overseeding may be a great option in conjunction with aeration. To increase the chance for successful germination, please follow the recommended watering schedule after overseeding:

Week 1: Water twice per day, a.m. and p.m.
Week 2: Water daily for 30-45 minutes
Week 3: Water 30-45 minutes, every other day

The key is to keep the grass seed moist.

Mowing

Please do not mow for at least 2 weeks after overseeding.
